UCLA Dance Marathon is one of the largest student-organized philanthropic events on the West Coast. With educational and fun activities throughout the year, we seek to unite the UCLA campus in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Our work culminates in a 26-hour dance-a-thon where hundreds of dancers acknowledge the battle of children suffering from HIV/AIDS by remaining on their feet for the entire duration of the event. Proceeds from Dance Marathon, over a million dollars over the past 6 years, have benefited organizations both committed to future research as well as helping those currently infected or affected by the disease. We are proud to continue our support for our three beneficiaries in 2008, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Camp Kindle, and Camp Heartland. Dance Marathon strives to address all aspects of the pediatric HIV/AIDS pandemic. By supporting the Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, a worldwide leader in innovative research and advocacy efforts, we are funding exploration in the laboratory in hopes of eventually eradicating the disease from future generations. Furthermore, Dance Marathon also funds programs geared towards children currently infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. The camps allow these children a refuge- a place where they can go and live a normal childhood, free of the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS. These camps fully fund each camper’s participation, ensuring that anyone who wants to attend has that ability. Their commitment to providing outstanding recreation and support services for campers is matched by our responsibility to educate the community about HIV prevention, awareness, and compassion.
